Many forums have activated the email verification and/or the administrator approval for maximum security. Are they activated in your forums? Why?
Personally, I think that the visitors want to relax in a forum, that's why I don't activate them. In order to prevent spam ( spam bots, spammers ), I usually set up a security question or something like that. Am I the only one? I hope no.Down

The best way to combat spam bots is to use a combination of email verification with Anti Spam measures such as question/answer challenges. Captcha is not as useful as it once was as the more advanced bots can now work these out. The best Captcha service I have found recently is KeyCaptcha where you have to play a small game to get verified.
